Photoshoot


Here are some images from my photoshoot for my magazine 'Kaleidoscope'. As I plan to follow the conventions of Harpers Bazaar by having the same model on the front cover and contents page to create a sense of continuity, I have used a variety of locations featuring 2 different  models as I want to emulate the simplicity achieved by Harpers Bazaar of having the same model on my contents page so the page looks minimalistic and not overly cluttered with too much text and images.
The first set of images were taken at 'St Dunstan's in the East', I chose this location as the historical element of the building really helped to create a moody mise-en-scene ; St Dunstan's in the east was originally a church in the 18th century but was later bombed in WW2 and has now been turned into a public garden, I have used the rustic characteristics of the old church building to create a moody atmosphere associated with autumn and create a harsh contrast from the eerie atmosphere of the building and brighter clothes of the model. My model is dressed in neutral clothes to represent the transitional period of summer from autumn and the warm colours reflect the autumn season and overall colour scheme. 
The second set of images were taken at 'God's Own Junkyard', I chose this location to create bright, eye-catching images that will stand out amongst other magazine covers ; Gods Own Junkyard is a neon art showcase of Chris Bracey's work who has created iconic neon signs for sets and movies.  I have used the brightly coloured neon lights to create a busy and exciting overall mise-en-scene. The vibrant blue, pink and red neon signs are to reflect the summer season and create shadows and highlights that significantly contrast from the model and her surroundings. 

The third set of images were taken at a home studio I created using a light with a tripod stand. I have used this location as it follows the traditional convention of studio images of a fashion photo shoot and I wanted to experiment with different locations and challenge myself to produce professional images that look similar to fashion magazine photography, I have experimented with different uses of shadows and highlights to create different moods such as mysterious and bright. I attempted to create a studio set-up as this the conventional location seen on many magazine covers.

The last set of images were taken at the 'Surrey Quays docks park', I have used this location as it encompasses my overall nature theme for my September cover, I also chose to take photos here as I wanted to experiment working with natural lighting and different lighting conditions in different areas of the park. I have used the autumnal background to reflect the nature theme of my autumn issue, I have used a large variety of different locations within the park to create a wider range of images to choose from for the later stages of editing.

Planning editions 1 and 2


above I have attached an initial mind map for the front cover and contents page for the first 2 editions of my fashion magazine 'Kaleidoscope' I am aiming to do a summer and autumn edition for each cover surrounding a variety of themes. For my summer edition my theme is going to be colours and expression. I am going to do this through having a brightly, coloured background with a model being in an unconventional pose seen on magazine front covers such as smiling or sticking their tongue out to express their individuality, I am also going to reinforce this idea through the feature lines on my cover. My autumn edition  is going to be focused on, feminism and street wear, I am going to show this through having a model wearing clothing associated with street wear brands and trends seen in the industry and popular urban magazines such as i-d and dazed. To project my feminist theme my model with have a serious facial expression and political topics will be in my feature lines.

To make sure my house style is the same I will follow the same layout for both editions of my magazine front cover:

  • the masthead will be at the top of the page in the same glitch  font for both editions
  • the image will be central with the model's angle of gaze directly towards the camera
  • the model's name along with a pull quote will be central at the bottom of the page in the same Gothic font for both editions
  • there will be a short summary sentence at the bottom of the page in bold sans serif font
I will also ensure the layout of my contents page will remain the same by having:

  • 3 main images at the top of the page above different divided sections
  •  the masthead will be at the top of the page above the contents typography
  • The colour of the contents page typography will be the same colour  as the model's name on the front cover. 
I will ensure my theme will be different for both issues through the use of colour, images, font and feature lines. For my  summer edition my colour scheme will be yellow,orange, blue and pink whereas my autumn edition will contain red, green and different tones of orange and brown. 
For my images  I will use a range of close-up and medium long shots to add variation go my front covers and ensure my theming will be different.
Despite the tone of my feature lines remaining the same for both editions they contain a variation of content to match the theming of the issue.
